For a nice versatile disortion, you've got a few options. Without getting ridiculous, check out the Proco Rat (used by Jimmy Eat World) and a vintage MXR Distortion+ (get a green one without LED indicator or power jack) these will both do light overdrive to fuzz and the distortion bit in between.
The rat is about ?55 new, if you shop around. While on ebay, the Distortion+ (they come up regularly) can be anywhere between ?40 and ?70 (the decent priced ones, obviously they can go higher when people get 'auction fever' as it were).
These will both give you a fairly solid sound, but if you want to get something really special try and find a Bixonic Expandora. Omar Rodriguez uses one in Mars Volta and probably used one in At The Drive-in too. They are about ?120 new and I've never seen one on ebay. Nor have I heard one, except on record used by Omar.
Anyhoo, get a copy of a guitar magazine somewhere down south sells them.
Hope I've helped again.
